Solar Eclipse over Albuquerque

eclipse

Albuquerque lies along the path of the annular solar eclipse that will pass through the southwest on May 20, 2012. In addition to that great good luck, the city also has clear skies that are great for astronomical viewing. The last annular eclipse was almost 18 years ago and the next one won't happen until 2023. This is a must see event.

There will be plenty of places to view the eclipse, which happens at maximum from 6:28 p.m. to 6:33 p.m. The UNM Campus Observatory will have a free event beginning at 6 p.m. that will host about 2,000 viewers. You'll definitely want to take a lawn chair. The observatory is on Yale just north of Lomas. Get more information about this event and eclipse viewing from my Annular Solar Eclipse article. The piece also includes talks featuring the annular eclipse.

Tours of Old Town

tour

Recently, I got to discover, or re-discover Old Town simply by taking a walking tour. Having lived in Albuquerque for more than 30 years, I knew I didn't know everything about it's history, but I was surprised at how much I did learn! I took a history tour through Tours of Old Town and had a fantastic guide in Pat Ward. Pat's deep knowledge of Old Town's legends and lore helped me see the area in a different light. I knew Old Town had its saloons, but had no idea it was an area known for its brawls and fights as well as criminal activity. And I learned the area's houses were converted into galleries and shops as a direct result of Route 66 (Central Avenue) in the 1930s.

Tours of Old Town offers history tours, ghost tours, moonlight tours, scavenger hunts, ghost hunting tours and specialty tours. I'd highly recommend them, whether you're visiting, or a local.

Albuquerque Crime Statistics

The FBI publishes an annual Crime in the United States report, and although the numbers are still being compiled for 2011, the 2010 numbers are in. Albuquerque is often cited for being a city with a high crime rate, but what does that mean? The Albuquerque crime statistics for 2010 note there were less homicides than in 2009. There were several categories where the city fared better than the previous year.

How does Albuquerque fare when matched against other cities of the same size? Tucson is comparable in population and for 2010, they had more homicides, robberies, auto thefts and arsons. Denver is slightly larger than Albuquerque, but had less crime overall.

Corrales, Bosque Farms, Edgewood, Estancia and Rio Rancho are a few nearby towns with low crime rates.

Valentine Bike Dates

hearts

Albuquerque has some amazing romantic ideas for Valentine's day, and the list keeps getting bigger. Routes Rentals & Tours has announced they'll be offering Valentine's bike dates. How cool is that? If you're tired of the same old chocolate and flowers routine, you can either book a professionally guided tour that comes with wine tasting, or take a self-guided bike date, which is a tour that comes with prepared picnic, wine tasting and/or chocolates.

The Singles Tasting & Tour is something you can do on your own or with friends. The Paseo del Bosque and St. Claire Winery tour takes in a leisurely ride along the bosque, ending at sunset at the St. Claire Winery & Bistro. There are two dates to choose from for this tour: February 11 or 25, starting at 2 p.m. Cost for the 1.5-2 hour ride is $25 per person with bike rental, or $15 per person if you bring your own.

The Couples Tasting & Tour is a professionally guided tour along the Paseo del Bosque river trail. On a bike wrapped in red lights, you'll take a leisurely ride along the river, then enjoy sunset from the St. Claire Winery & Bistro, where you'll sample wines. How romantic is that? The tours are on February 12 and 26, starting at 2 p.m. The 1.5 to 2 hour ride is $50 per couple, which includes bike rental. If you want to bring your own bike, it's $30 per couple.

Or take your own, self-guided tour and make it a Valentine Bike Date. There are several options to choose from, such as the tour to Casa Rodena Winery, Picnic in the Park and Paseo del Bosque to TIngley Beach. Customize your day out with a packed picnic basket or chocolates. It's all fun.

To reserve your bike seat spot, call (505) 933-5667. Here's to amour from the seat of a bike!

Farm Table Restaurant

With its deep history of agriculture, it's no surprise that in the past few years, small scale farmers in the Albuquerque area have taken up the shovel and hoe in record numbers. Now there's a restaurant to match that upswing of growth, and no doubt others will follow. Let's hope so.

Like Portland, Seattle and other major cities where the farm to table movement has created a direct link from soil to plate, Albuquerque now has its own farm restaurant to match the vibe. Farm & Table opened its doors just a few weeks ago in Albuquerque's north valley, by La Parada Mercantile. It's been getting rave reviews. Being a hard core locavore myself, eating much of what comes from our own small farm, I've often wondered why we Americans have been so slow to adopt the European model of eating what your neighbors grow. Now that we're moving toward local farms and their connection to restaurants, we'll all benefit. Here's to local food and drink!

If you've made it out to Farm & Table, please leave a review about your experience. I'll make it over just as soon as I can to write my own.

There will be historical re-enactments in honor of our state's Centennial, and a Route 66 theme will be part of the party. It all kicks off at noon and continues until well after dark.
